Adjunct EMDR in Ann Arbor, MI
Collaborating to get unstuck
What is Adjunctive EMDR and how does it work?
Adjunct EMDR Therapy is when two therapists partner to provide comprehensive, high-quality care for a client who may seem “stuck” or “looping” around a particular issue or somatic symptom. A client who has been working with a primary therapist will see an EMDR therapist for a specific amount of time to focus on a specific concern.
The sessions can be concurrent - meaning that the client meets with each therapist during a specific period of time - or the client may take a brief pause with their primary therapist while they meet intensively with an EMDR Therapist.
The therapists collaborate to create a customized treatment plan for the client. With the client’s consent, the therapists can coordinate a schedule that best meets the client’s needs. After the agreed-upon time frame for Adjunct EMDR Therapy is completed, the client returns to work exclusively with their primary therapist.
Adjunctive EMDR might be a good fit for your client if …
Traditional talk therapy has been generally beneficial for your client, but perhaps they’ve reached a “stuck point” or are “looping.” When progress begins to plateau, adding EMDR therapy to your existing treatment plan can be an excellent option to jumpstart continued growth and healing.
Clients with symptoms such intrusive memories, flashbacks, negative thoughts or feelings about themselves or others that just don’t change or go away in traditional treatment often benefit from EMDR.
How long does the Adjunctive EMDR collaboration last?
Usually this adjunctive therapy is short-term (4-12 sessions) to assist clearing up any single incident trauma or simple phobias that is interfering with the client making therapeutic gains. The success of the treatment is based on well-focused and clearly defined goals for the EMDR therapist as defined by the primary therapist and client.
Adjunctive EMDR therapy may also be needed as a longer term approach where EMDR is integrated in the ongoing therapy of the client, especially for clients with complex trauma or dissociation., rather it is focused and often brief strategies to help stimulate further change, typically around a specified problem area, memory, and recent trauma.

A 90 minute initial assessment to determine the focus of the EMDR Intensive. We will identify the painful memories, unpleasant beliefs, body sensations, emotions, or images from which you are seeking relief.

This customized workbook includes assessments and activities to prepare for the Intensive. The workbook allows you keep a record of progress on your treatment goals before, during, and after our sessions.
Customized treatment program
The EMDR Intensive sessions take place at my office in Ann Arbor or virtually for 1-4 sessions (usually 3 hours each session). Includes targeted treatment goals and resourcing activities.
Post-Intensive Interview
A 60-minute interview to debrief the experience and reflect on areas of insight, relief, and transformation. Discuss your next steps for continued growth and healing.
Benefits of EMDR Intensives
EMDR Intensives help people feel better, faster. EMDR Intensives are also cost effective. They are highly effective accelerated therapy and often require less time and overall cost than weekly therapy.

Frequently asked questions about EMDR Intensives
FAQs
-
Intensive application of trauma-focused therapy seems to be well tolerated in patients with PTSD, enabling faster symptom reduction with similar, or even better, results, while reducing the risk that patients drop out prematurely.
Intensive EMDR treatment is feasible and is indicative of reliable improvement in PTSD symptoms in a very short time frame.
An intensive program using EMDR therapy is a potentially safe and effective treatment alternative for complex PTSD.
The economy is compelling: even compared to other trauma therapy, the intensive format may decrease treatment time, because of time not spent on a) checking in at the beginning of each session, b) addressing current crises and concerns, c) focusing on stabilizing and coping skills that the client won’t need after trauma healing, or d) assisting the client in regaining composure at the end of the session.

Some insurance plans will reimburse a portion of the cost of an EMDR Intensive. Please know that the insurance company requires a diagnosis code as a reason for treatment. I recommend calling the customer service number on the back of your insurance card in order to get details about your specific plan. I’m happy to provide more information to help with this process.

EMDR intensive sessions are similar to going on a personal retreat. It’s best to allow time outside of sessions to be unscheduled or filled only with self-care activities like exercise, body work (yoga, acupuncture or massage), and creative expression – drawing, painting, cooking. For those traveling to Ann Arbor, I love to share a list of “Favorite Things” to help you make the most of your time outside of session.

EMDR Intensives give you the results you would get from months of therapy in a much shorter period of time. If you add up the cost of weekly therapy, an EMDR Intensive is actually more cost effective. Instead of waiting months, you can get the same results in a few days.
